How Much Does a Wedding Cost in 2026?

The short answer, the numbers behind it, and what drives your total up or down. All figures are national survey averages — estimates for planning, not quotes.

The national average

Two large industry surveys anchor the 2026 picture:

  • $34,200 — average wedding cost in The Knot's 2026 survey of 10,474 US couples (excluding honeymoon).
  • ~$36,000 — average reported in Zola's wedding cost survey.

The two figures land in the same neighborhood, which is reassuring — but an "average wedding" doesn't exist. A 50-guest brunch in a small town and a 200-guest black-tie evening in Manhattan are different financial universes. The three levers that move your number most are guest count, region, and style.

Typical cost by guest count

Estimated total ranges for a classic-style wedding in a mid-size city (planning estimates — your city and vendors will shift these):

Guest countEstimated total rangeNotes
~25 (micro wedding)$8,000 – $15,000Fixed costs like photography weigh more per guest
~50$15,000 – $28,000Sweet spot for budget-conscious couples
~100$30,000 – $55,000Near the national average
~150$45,000 – $80,000Catering and rentals scale hard here
~200+$60,000 – $110,000+Larger venues, more staff, bigger everything

Cost by region

Where you marry matters enormously. Estimated catering cost per guest — the single most guest-sensitive line item — by area type:

Region typeEstimated catering per guestExamples
Major metro~$150New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago
Mid-size city~$110Austin, Denver, Nashville, Portland
Small town~$85Suburban and smaller-city markets
Rural~$65Countryside venues, hometown weddings

A 100-guest wedding can cost roughly twice as much in a major metro as in a rural area, before you change a single other decision.

What pushes costs up (and down)

  • Up: Saturday in peak season (May–October), plated dinner vs. buffet, open bar vs. beer & wine, live band, extensive florals.
  • Down: Friday or Sunday dates, off-season months, brunch or lunch receptions, smaller guest list, digital invitations, in-house venue catering packages.
Hidden costs to budget for: service charges and gratuities (often 20–25% on catering), vendor meals, marriage license, alterations, tips, and overtime fees. This is why planners recommend a 4% contingency fund — see the budget breakdown guide.
