Methodology & Sources

Exactly where our numbers come from, how the calculator does its math, and what the results do — and don't — mean.

Data sources

  • The Knot 2026 Real Weddings Study — survey of 10,474 US couples; average wedding cost $34,200 (excluding honeymoon). Used as the national benchmark on our homepage and average cost guide.
  • Zola wedding cost survey — reports an average near $36,000, corroborating The Knot's order of magnitude.
  • Industry-standard category split — venue 30%, catering & bar 23%, photography/videography 12%, attire & beauty 8%, flowers & decor 8%, music 7%, cake 3%, invitations 3%, transportation 2%, contingency 4%. This split is the consensus of wedding planner guidance and survey breakdowns; it sums to 100%.

Calculator formulas

"Estimate my cost" mode. Catering is the most guest-sensitive cost, so it's the anchor:

  1. Estimated catering cost = guests × regional catering rate × style multiplier.
Regional rates (estimated averages per guest): major metro $150, mid-size city $110, small town $85, rural $65.
Style multipliers: luxury ×1.4, classic ×1.0, intimate & budget ×0.65.
  2. Total estimate = catering cost ÷ 0.23 (catering's 23% share of the standard split).
  3. Each category amount = total × its percentage, rounded to the nearest $10. The displayed total is the sum of the rounded categories, so the breakdown always adds up.

"Allocate my budget" mode. Your entered total is multiplied by each category's percentage and rounded to the nearest $10; the displayed total is the sum of the rounded lines.

What "estimate" means here

  • Results are planning estimates built from national survey averages. They are not quotes, and no vendor on earth is bound by them.
  • Real prices vary by city, season, day of week, venue, and vendor tier — often by 2× or more between markets.
  • Service charges, gratuities, and taxes (often 20–30% on catering) are market-dependent and not itemized in the model; the 4% contingency fund exists partly for these.
